The story

A question
without mercy

A journey through a hidden manuscript, a crisis of faith and the price of knowledge.

Deus Absconditus is an eleven-track symphonic gothic metal concept album set in a double Benedictine monastery in Bavaria around 1520. The story follows a deeply religious monk who discovers an anonymous hidden manuscript within the monastery’s scriptorium.

Expecting blasphemy or the supernatural, he instead encounters something more dangerous: a chain of arguments capable of undermining the certainty upon which his entire life has been built. What begins as an act of reading becomes a descent through doubt, desire, confession, judgment and fire.

Across eleven chapters, sacred ritual collides with forbidden thought. The institution can erase a name, condemn a body and seal a book away. The question survives.

Track by track

Eleven chapters

From absolute faith to the silence beyond certainty.

I · Ad Missam

Perfect order

The story opens inside the certainty of ritual. Bells, Latin prayer and disciplined devotion define a world in which every gesture has meaning and every answer appears to have already been given. The Mass is sanctuary, structure and the measure of all things.

II · The Scriptorium

Words endure

Among ink, parchment and candlelight, knowledge is copied so that it may outlive its keepers. The monk believes the written word serves divine order. Yet the scriptorium also reveals another truth: what is preserved, altered or erased is decided by human hands.

III · Codex Tenebris

The hidden manuscript

An anonymous codex lies hidden where no approved text should be. It contains no demons, conjuration or magical revelation. Its danger lies in reason: patient arguments that transform forbidden reading into the first honest question of the monk’s life.

IV · The Whispering Vault

Others came before

The search descends beneath the monastery, into a place built to keep memory out of sight. Marginalia, damaged records and erased names reveal that the forbidden question is older than the man who found it. Others read, doubted and disappeared before him.

V · Sisters of the Veil

Desire enters

Across the boundary of the double monastery, intellect and desire become impossible to separate. The encounter brings warmth, danger and the possibility of creation beyond obedience. What doctrine names temptation begins to feel like another form of truth.

VI · Deus Absconditus

Heaven refuses

At the centre of the album, the monk demands an answer from the God to whom he has surrendered everything. No voice arrives. The hidden God remains hidden, and silence becomes more devastating than condemnation because it offers neither proof nor release.

VII · Confessiones

Doubt behind prayer

He entrusts his doubt to another brother, expecting judgment or reassurance. Instead, the confession reveals something more unsettling: doubt has been hiding behind other prayers as well. For the first time, he discovers that the question may not be his alone.

VIII · The Tribunal

The question becomes heresy

Before the tribunal, thought itself is placed on trial. The judges do not need to disprove the manuscript; they need only establish that it was read, considered and allowed to change him. Questions become crimes when certainty is an instrument of power.

IX · The Pyre

Faith tested by fire

Condemned as a heretic, the monk faces the final demand: recant and return to the certainty that once protected him. Fire strips away doctrine, fear and reputation. What remains is neither triumphant faith nor simple unbelief, but a question he refuses to betray.

X · Dies Irae (1523)

The record is never complete

Three years later, the monastery has rewritten the event as warning and judgment. His name is almost gone. Yet among ash, damaged pages and official silence, another hand finds a surviving fragment. The forbidden question begins again.

Epilogue · The Silent Beyond the Sky

Beyond certainty

The story closes beyond monastery, verdict and flame. There is no final conversion and no easy denial. Life continues beneath an unanswered sky, with the difficult freedom of living without certainty. Silence is no longer punishment. It is the horizon.

Some questions do not die.
They only wait.
